2014 Race of Champions
- Pascal Wehrlein to line up for first time in Race of Champions in Barbados, 13th – 14th December, 2014
- Pascal Wehrlein: “I’m really forward to competing in the Race of Champions along with other top drivers from around the world.”
Stuttgart – Mercedes-Benz DTM driver Pascal Wehrlein will contest next weekend’s Race of Champions (December 13th – 14th) for the first time in his career. Wehrlein will take part in both the individual competition on Sunday and in the ROC Nations Cup on Saturday. In the team event, he will partner reigning GP2 champion Jolyon Palmer as Team Young Stars.
20-year-old Wehrlein achieved his first DTM victory at the Lausitzring last season, entering the record books as the youngest winner so far in the 30-year history of the touring car series. Shortly afterwards, he was appointed as test and reserve driver for Silver Arrows Formula 1 team MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS.
This year’s Race of Champions will take place in Barbados for the first time. In a departure from previous events which were held in large stadiums, drivers will compete this year on a circuit in Bushy Park, Barbados. Among the participants will be drivers from a number of major international racing series, including Formula 1, the DTM, touring car and sports car world championships, as well as from NASCAR and Indycar.
Apart from Wehrlein, other drivers in the Barbados line-up include former Mercedes‑Benz DTM drivers Susie Wolff and David Coulthard and reigning FIA Formula 3 European Champion Esteban Ocon, who won the 2014 FIA Formula 3 Championship with the new Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 engine. As a reward for his efforts, he was invited to a test session with the DTM Mercedes AMG C‑Coupé last week in Jerez de la Frontera.
Pascal Wehrlein: “It’s a great honour for me to be asked to participate in this well established prestigious event. I’ve followed the Race of Champions in the past on TV and am looking forward to my maiden outing with top racing drivers from around the world. The racetrack in Bushy Park Barbados looks great, and I can’t wait to put my foot down to the boards for the first time there. Participating in the Race of Champions is the perfect way for me to round off a terrific season in which I achieved my first DTM pole position, my first DTM victory and completed my first Formula 1 test.”
