2015 FIA Formula 3 European Championship
- Felix Rosenqvist (Prema Powerteam) wins 2015 FIA Formula 3 European Championship with Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 engine
- Succeeds Esteban Ocon, who is currently acting as test and reserve driver to the Mercedes-AMG DTM Team during the 2015 season
- Third consecutive win for a Prema Powerteam driver powered by Mercedes-Benz
Nürburgring – Early title win at the legendary Nürburgring. The 23-year-old Swede Felix Rosenqvist (Prema Powerteam) was crowned the new FIA Formula 3 European champion at the penultimate race weekend in the Eifel. Overall this season, he has secured twelve victories, 21 podiums and 16 pole positions with the Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 engine. Having amassed 453 points, he is now in an unassailable position in the run-up to the season finale which will be staged at Hockenheim (October 16th-18th, 2015) within the context of the DTM.
The experienced Formula 3 driver is contesting his fourth full season in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship this year and can look back on 28 victories and 49 podium finishes in the series so far. Last year, Rosenqvist achieved the sixth victory for a Mercedes-Benz engine in the prestigious Formula 3 Grand Prix on the Macau street circuit. Just like the Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM, the new F3 414 Formula 3 engine was developed by Mercedes-Benz motorsport partner HWA AG.
In each of the past two years, Prema Powerteam drivers have won the FIA Formula 3 European Championship title with Mercedes-Benz power. The Italian, Raffaele Marciello, took the European championship in 2013, while last season, French driver Esteban Ocon was crowned champion. This season, Ocon is lining up for ART Grand Prix in GP3 which is staged under the Formula 1 banner and is also a test and reserve driver with the Mercedes-AMG DTM Team.
Rosenqvist, Ocon and Marciello are not the first young drivers to start their careers in Formula 3 with Mercedes-Benz engines. During their time in Formula 3, many drivers, including two-time Formula 1 world champion and MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS driver Lewis Hamilton, four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes-AMG DTM driver Pascal Wehrlein have all utilised Mercedes-Benz engines.
Felix Rosenqvist: “FIA Formula 3 European champion – I’ve finally done it! I’m on the top spot of the podium at the end of the year after previously taking third and second place overall. My win in the Macau Grand Prix a year ago was an incredible experience, but to be rewarded now at the end of a long season for all the hard work is just as great a feeling. Many thanks to the guys at Prema Powerteam, and, of course, to Mercedes-Benz as well. We did everything possible together to make this title a reality.”
Ulrich Fritz, Head of Mercedes-AMG DTM: “Congratulations to Felix Rosenqvist on winning the FIA Formula 3 European Championship before the season has even ended! Considering his results in recent years, he thoroughly deserves this European title win. He has brought his sparkling talent to the fore through success in the prestigious Macau Grand Prix last year and by clinching this title. I wish him the best of luck and hope that he can go on to achieve many more successes in the further course of his career.”
